Smarticipation

Many authors and practitioners see “Smart Cities” as a competitive factor in the global network. But how can technology actually benefit humanity? In my Major Project (which is like a thesis, with pretty graphics), I investigated Smart Cities in a more local context, to find out how technology might help to directly empower citizens and communities.

Location of Brüsseler Platz in Cologne.
Problem Identification
The mixed-use neighbourhood includes at least two groups with clashing interests; young people on the one hand, who enjoy the space and its surrounding bars and kiosks, and local residents on the other hand, who feel disturbed by the noise generated by the former group. 
Designs
NoiseScape: Visualizes the noise level in real-time within its spatial context. Also provides passive noise protection.
Visualization of current noise level and other data on the church wall. Also shows its relation to past values and measurements at other locations.
Visualization of trash left in flowerbeds.
Fountain of Tranquility: its height is inversely related to the current noise level.
Digital Signage: they show real-time information about other places in the city.
Smartphone App: allows citizens to record and upload their own data or comments.
